The play is set in our own tumultuous times. Maestra Adela Dolores is a retired singer who believes fully in the transformative power of the Kundiman art song. Her own sheltered world is made up her friends, Mayen, Mitch and Helen, middle–class matrons who share a love for music, but who also bring their political and social concerns into the Maestra’s soirees, their “Kundiman Parties.”
Adela has taken on a new student, Antoinette, who is seeking to find her own voice. Antoinette introduces the ladies to her boyfriend, a tech-savvy social media specialist, Bobby. It is through Bobby and his curiosity that we learn of the Maestra’s storied past.
Bobby convinces the Maestra that her passion for kundiman will have much to say to an audience looking for creative and novel ways to resist an impending dictatorship. Surprisingly, their effort goes viral. But with the new found popularity also comes danger.
With the appearance of Bobby’s father, Senator Juancho, and his offer for the State to sponsor Adela and Bobby’s movement, each must make a choice. Who will continue to Sing, Remember and Resist?
The play is set on May 24, 30 & 31 at 8PM, May 25, 26, June 1 & 2 at 3PM and 8PM at the PETA Theater Center.
