As rice becomes a strategic commodity in Africa, many countries have embarked on various programs that, along with continental initiatives, aspire to chart a course of action for moving the regional rice sector forward.

The EARC 2021 will serve as a platform for accomplishing the ambitious plan of strengthening domestic rice production by bringing together key players in the sector and initiating substantive discussions on the opportunities and challenges that it faces.

Conference objectives

  1. To facilitate knowledge exchange on rice sector research and development at national and regional levels;

  2. To take stock of public, private, and donor-supported initiatives to inform policy-making and implementation; and

  3. To boost multi-stakeholder collaboration toward achieving national and regional rice self-sufficiency, increasing food and nutrition security, and alleviating poverty through inclusive and sustainable production and commercialization.

Conference structure

The 3-day conference will be a hybrid of face-to-face and virtual events. It will start with the 1-day simultaneous onsite country workshops in six countries in East Africa (18 May, by invitation only): Tanzania, Kenya, Ethiopia, Uganda, Burundi, and Rwanda, followed by a 2-day virtual event (19-20 May).
