Asia Society Philippines and Manila House invite you to Tibet: Identity, Autonomy, Democracy, and Survival. — A Conversation with Dr. Lobsang Sangay.Drawing from his experience as the democratically elected Sikyong (President) of the Central Tibetan Administration, Dr. Sangay will share insights on principled leadership, democratic values, institutional resilience, and the challenges of sustaining a community’s identity and aspirations in a changing world. The conversation will consider how leadership and institutions can adapt to complex challenges while remaining grounded in shared principles and collective identity. About the SpeakerDr. Lobsang Sangay is a Senior Visiting Fellow at the East Asian Legal Studies Program at Harvard Law School. He served as the democratically elected Sikyong (President) of the Central Tibetan Administration for two terms, from 2011 to 2021. Dr. Sangay earned his BA and LLB from the University of Delhi, followed by an LLM in 1995 and an SJD in 2004 from Harvard Law School. At Harvard, he received the Yong K. Kim ’95 Memorial Prize for excellence in his dissertation and contributions to the understanding of East Asia. During his time at Harvard, he organized seven rounds of meetings and conferences bringing together Tibetan, Western, and Chinese scholars, including the first-ever meeting between His Holiness the Dalai Lama and 25 Chinese scholars and students. Dr. Sangay is also an Asia21 Fellow of the Asia Society.
